![]() ![]() As a result of the Soviet help with Chinese arms industry, China received a large number of T-34 tanks (designated Type 58 in Chinese service) followed by a large number of T-54A tanks, which served and were later license-produced under the name of Type 59. The first one is the Soviet friendship era where the People’s Republic of China and the Soviet Union were allies. There are four basic eras that the Chinese tank development can be divided into – not counting the pre-war period, the wartime period and the Civil War aftermath of the war where all sides used mostly pre-war, lend-leased or captured equipment. China has about 1,200 Type 99s.This month in our Branch of the Month series is dedicated to the Chinese Main Battle Tank branch, available in Zhang Feng’s vehicle pool. The Type 99 tank only began development in the late 1980s and was introduced in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Thus, they have learned a trick or two by watching the modern development of tanks in those countries and biding their time. They were not forced to prove battlefield prowess in the European killing fields of World War Two like the Russians, British, Americans, and Germans. The Chinese are fairly new to the tank-building game. However, it is still considered a third-generation tank and not next-generation like Russia’s T-14 Armata, Japan’s Type 10, or South Korea’s K2 Black Panther. It has modern armor, an improved gun, better fire control systems, and enhanced communication features. The Type 99 has some commendable features.
